On my walks, I always feel compelled to collect perfectly round pebbles or stones with a nice smooth surface and take them home with me. As a result, my stone collection has grown quite a bit. But the stones often end up forgotten in a box. So I decided to turn them into decorative magnets. These pebble magnets fit in nicely with my decor.

Materials needed for the decorative magnets

To make decorative magnets with stones, you will need the following craft materials:
  • Various disc magnets, e.g. type S-08-03-N, S-06-03-N or S-06-02-N (depending on the size and weight of the stones)
  • Magnet adhesive, such as UHU MAX REPAIR
  • Small, smooth pebbles
  • Acrylic paints or felt-tip pens

Glue the magnets onto the stones

First, I thoroughly washed the stones and let them dry. Then I placed the selected pebbles face down on a flat surface. Make sure that you place the pebbles far enough apart so that the magnets don’t attract each other later.
I used UHU MAX REPAIR magnet adhesive to attach the neodymium magnets to the stones. After that, I had to wait for the glue to dry. It's best to let the decorative magnets sit undisturbed overnight.

Making decorative magnets with natural stones

I found the natural patterns and colours of my chosen stones to be quite beautiful, so I decided to leave them in their natural form. Depending on the colours of the pictures I wanted to attach to the fridge and my magnetic boards with the stone magnets, I selected natural stones with matching hues.
In the end, I had made more decorative magnets than I needed for my postcards and photos. So I arranged the remaining decorative stone magnets on my metal office cabinet to form a heart shape. That looks really chic, too.

Making decorative magnets with painted stones

Paint the decorative magnets

If you don't like the natural look, you can also paint the stones. I selected six of my stones that were ideal for painting. Using felt-tip pens, I drew various patterns and motifs on the finished decorative magnets.
However, if you would like to use paint to colour the stone magnets, I recommend doing so before attaching the magnets. This way, you won't have to paint around the magnets or any glue residue.

You can also use stones to create spooky Halloween magnets. For instructions, take a look at the magnet project Halloween magnets made with stones.
